Madison School & Community Recreation

Madison's west side gains a new space for all to play

overview of project

This summer, Daniels completed the newest location for Madison School & Community Recreation, transforming an existing big-box store into a recreation haven. The new space features a basketball court, dance studios, art studio, and community classrooms. The building will serve hundreds of students and community members, providing opportunities to exercise, learn new skills, and connect with the community.

construction highlights

The site selected was an existing commercial space, in need of major repairs and upgrades. Work to the building included major demolition and structural work. All new HVAC, electrical, and lighting was needed.

To transform the space into a multi-functional recreation center, crews had to install new walls and flooring. To manage noise levels in large capacity rooms like the gym, sound baffle was installed. New bathrooms and office space provided the ability to serve the many visitors expected. Finally, sound systems were installed to provide music and/or for class instructor use.

The project was put on a tight time frame, and thanks to the work of our employees and subcontractors, was able to open at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year. Project Manager Joe Trainor and Superintendent Dave Radtke were instrumental in its success.

community impact

This building, MSCR West, is one of three locations in the Madison area. MSCR provides afterschool and summer programs for school-age children, adapted recreation, day trips, and a wide variety of sports, art, and outdoor programming.

“We are so proud to open this new facility. It is the first time in MSCR’s 95+ year history that we have multiple spacious arts and fitness studios and a gym in our own program site.

~ Janet Dyer, MSCR Executive Director

The MSCR West building provides 30,000 square feet for recreation programming on the west side. The facility’s larger studios allow MSCR to increase the number of participants in popular classes and move customers off waiting lists.

At MSCR West, more than 175 classes were available this fall and 274 classes are available for the winter & spring session. Nearly 2,860 people registered for the winter & spring session during the first few days of registration.

MSCR’s mission is

“MSCR will enhance the quality of life for individuals in the Madison Metropolitan School District and for the community by providing recreation and enrichment opportunities year-round that are accessible to all”
